Student Perspectives: Navigating the Job Market with Career Services

Vankita, an ambitious FCT student, recently landed a job at a well-known luxury jewelry brand. We spoke to her to learn how she found this position, prepared for the interview, and adapted to her new workplace. She offered invaluable advice and tips for fellow students also hunting for jobs. Our conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

How did you get started with your job search?

The best thing I did was book an appointment with Career Services to help with my job search. During the appointment, not only did I get to learn more about the Canadian job market, but they also provided helpful tips and advice.

Can you share with us the tips and advice they offered you?

The first step was assessing my skills, interests, and goals to develop a personalized career plan that outlined the steps to secure a job, potential obstacles, and strategies to overcome them.

Once we identified my objectives, the career services team assisted me in crafting a resume that would appeal to employers and a cover letter highlighting my experiences and abilities for the positions I was interested in. Then, they directed me to reputable job boards and encouraged me to attend events like career fairs, networking, and employer events, as they could help me in finding a job that suits me.

How have you been adjusting to your new workplace?

To help adjust to Canadian work culture, I participated in a cultural sensitivity training workshop. Some employers may provide them to assist newcomers in navigating the local workplace culture. I also relied on being open and paying attention to the interactions and behaviours of the people around me. Adjusting your behaviour per local customs is critical to blend in with work and Canadian cultures.

What skills and experiences have been most important in your current position as sales associate?

Communication skills. You need to interact with customers, comprehend their needs, and communicate information about goods and services both orally and in writing.

Customer service would be another skill. Having communication skills is one of the most critical responsibilities of a sales associate, which is to offer top-notch customer service. With good customer service skills, your customers will have a pleasurable shopping experience.

What advice would you give to other students who are seeking employment or are in the process of preparing for job interviews?

Be consistent, stay motivated, and build connections. Also, don't hesitate to contact the Career Services team for help in your job search, resumes, interviews, and more.
